One Day. One Gift. One Scholarship.

One Day. One Gift. One Scholarship.

Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Alumni proved just that last fall with the inaugural Giving Tuesday campaign.

If you aren’t familiar, Giving Tuesday occurs the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is a global day of giving to kick off the charitable gift season.

Last year, Southeast asked alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends to participate by making a small gift of $10 online with the goal of reaching $5,000 to create a need-based scholarship. If the goal were reached, a generous donor offered to match the funds to endow the scholarship. By noon, the Southeast family had reached the goal, and another donor had come forward to say if we raised another $5,000, they’d match a second scholarship.

By the end of the day, more than $11,000 was raised from 330 individuals, endowing two scholarships to assist students in need.

We’ll be online again this Giving Tuesday, asking those so inclined to participate. It’s a little effort that can quite literally change a life. Just ask Megan Joost, one of the recipients of last year’s We Are One scholarship.

“My parents are divorced, so college for my sister and me is challenging for my mom. This scholarship helps so much,” says Joost. “The idea that such a big benefit can come from small gifts is wonderful to see. I’ll definitely be participating this year!”

November 28. One Day. One Gift. One Scholarship. We hope you’ll participate because together, we truly can do so much.
