NEW LEADERS were announced for both the Southeast Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams this spring.

2015-EVT-RekhaPatterson-0415-02-JRRekha Patterson was selected as the women’s head basketball coach. Patterson has spent the past two seasons as the associate head coach at Ball State. She previously worked at Baylor, Creighton and Illinois State. During her coaching career, Patterson has been on staff of programs that have advanced to postseason play in 11 of 13 seasons.

EVT-RickRayRick Ray was introduced as the new men’s basketball head coach. Ray spent the last three seasons as head coach at Mississippi State. Prior to his work at Mississippi, Ray spent two seasons at Clemson, four successful years on staff at Purdue and began his coaching career at Indiana State.

BASEBALL TEAM – Secured the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Regular Season Championship for the second straight year. The Redhawks locked up the No. 1 seed in the OVC Tournament and were defeated in the championship game.


TRACK AND FIELD – Competed at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships with the men finishing second and the women placing fourth. Redhawks won the 100-meter dash, the decathalon, the triple jump and men’s and women’s shot put. Several Redhawks qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Sarah Hall set a school record in the hammer throw at the Memphis Invitational.


MEN’S AND WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS – Earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team accolades for the 2014 season. The women’s cumulative GPA of 3.77 was fourth highest in the nation. The men’s team has earned academic honors the last seven years.


SOCCER TEAM – Earned the regular season championship but also took home the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award. The Redhawks posted the second-best GPA in NCAA Division I. The No. 2 ranking is the highest in program history, topping last year’s third place finish. It also marked the fifth straight year the program has been honored with the Team Academic Award. The Redhawks were upset by Jacksonville State in the semifinals of the OVC Soccer Championship.


SOFTBALL TEAM – Won eight of its final 12 games of the 2015 season, ending with a 12-inning loss to Eastern Illinois in the OVC Softball Tournament. Southeast outfielder Kayla Fortner was named to the 2015 National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region Team and Second-Team Mideast Region Honors. In addition, Fortner tied Southeast’s all-time single-season home run record.


GYMNASTICS TEAM – Saw sophomore Ashley Thomas advance to the NCAA Regional in all-around where she tied for ninth. Thomas concluded a stellar season in which she earned first-team ALL-MIC honors and was an MIC Scholar-Athlete.


STUDENT-ATHLETES – 58 student-athletes earned degrees from Southeast during spring commencement exercises.
