Building Blocks Program Prepares Children with Autism

Southeast students are working one-on-one with children with autism in a new initiative to help prepare the children for preschool. In the Building Blocks program, Southeast students focus not only on the children’s communication skills but also on life skills, such as eating or going to the restroom and just being a kid. The program is part of an effort to expand the Autism Center’s services and reach more families says Director Dr. Melissa King. In addition to the benefit to the children, King says it’s valuable experience for the students. “This is the practical application of everything that’s in their textbook and beyond. There’s a lot you just can’t learn in a textbook.”
