A Note from the Dean
Rhonda Weller-Stilson, Dean of the Holland College of Arts and Media
We are very excited at Southeast to bring together the Department of Art and Design, the Department of Mass Media, the Department of Music, and The Jeanine Larson Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance under one college. We believe these nationally accredited academic departments represent some of the best programs in the state and the Midwest. Our facilities are diverse, ranging from the only college campus dedicated to the arts in Missouri to the Rust Center for Media in the heart of downtown Cape Girardeau.
Students will find dynamic faculty providing countless experiential learning opportunities, such as the recent production of the original musical An American Hero, produced as part of the New York Musical Festival in New York City. Other opportunities include the Fault Line Film Festival, the River Campus Summer Arts Festival, ensemble performance series, gallery exhibitions, the New York and Los Angeles Senior Showcases, partnerships with the Southeast Missourian and KFVS, programming for ESPN3, and producing the award-winning student newspaper, The Arrow.
Our professional training programs focus on preparing students to enter directly into their discipline.
Students must be prepared to be diversified in their thoughts, abilities, and have a wide background of experiences. Our arts students need exposure in multiple genres of art, music, theatre, and dance to compete in this climate. For instance, a dancer might be asked to participate in a musical like An American in Paris that requires both ballet and an understanding of musical theatre. Our designers and mass media students will need proficiency in computer technology and be fast on their feet. Students will wear many hats in the years to come, and we do our best to prepare them for a variety of careers.
