Experience Outside the Classroom

Southeast students have the opportunity to take an outdoor adventure to Colorado each summer. Any student can take the course and participate in rock climbing, whitewater rafting, backpacking, and mountaineering as part of the curriculum. There are 54 mountains in Colorado over 14,000 feet referred to as “14ers” and the participants this past summer were able to summit two 14ers—one of which is the third highest mountain in Colorado, Mt. Harvard. Dr. Tom Holman has been teaching this course for 14 years. “It is a joy to see students embracing the challenges of this course, overcoming fears and developing self-confidence that transfers to daily life back home. I love seeing the class come together as a team and develop their communication, trust, and leadership skills to overcome the many challenges.”
