A Sticky Situation

The Gum Tree

You know it. You love it. You probably stuck your gum to it. We can all agree the Gum Tree is one of Southeast’s longest traditions, even if we can’t agree exactly how it all started. That tradition was swept down when a storm with high winds blew through Cape Girardeau in May 2018. Students and alumni rallied through a crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money to purchase and plant a new tree.

One Agriculture Professor Sven Svenson tells us can withstand the icky, sticky tradition that awaits it. The new Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wildfire’ was planted prior to the start of the fall 2018 semester and now has its own social media account you can follow on Facebook (SEMOGumTree).
